The dual panes had to be dropped because we switched from an input/output redirection model in v1, to a process injection model in v2. The redirection method made the two pane approach possible, but it had big drawbacks. In particular, quite a few common utilities (file editors, NSLOOKUP, even "More") didn't work very well with redirection, so we had to use the "launch in new console" workaround. In v2, everything works as it should; there's no need to give certain utilities special treatment. However, there's no practical and reliable way to split input and output into separate streams.
